This section deals with the impact on the historical record of man's past activities and therefore falls within the discipline of archaeology. Mineral extraction has a big part to play in both the preservation and the investigation of archaeological sites, as archaeological issues are often important in minerals planning. Whilst a presumption for the physical preservation of archaeological sites remains, it is tempered by the understanding that some sites are more important than others and that acceptable compromises can usually be reached.

Significant contributions to this section have been received from the partners listed above and they can be contacted for further information. Many of the other project partners listed in the partners tab on the top line menu have also contributed material in the form of comments, images and case studies.
